How is this for a sweet deal?

All of the people who got jobbed out of a seat at Super Bowl XLV got the royal treatment. In fact, they may have gotten a better deal than if they had gotten to sit in a tiny, uncomfortable plastic chair somewhere just below the gears that open the roof at Cowboys Stadium.

There have been a few different stories in regards to what each person was offered/given by the NFL. ESPN seems to have the bead on exactly what’s up.

In addition to the fact that these people got set up in a lounge in the stadium with free refreshments and swag, they now will get $2,400! Or they can simply go to the Super Bowl anytime and receive airfare and hotel accommodations.

Not a bad deal. Of course, most of these jokers probably dropped $2,400 on one ticket alone before factoring in any other expense. But why are they complaining? Or suing, for that matter.

Now they can sit on their hands and wait out their favorite team for a return to the Super Bowl, unless they’re Bills fans. For the Steelers and Packers fans, they likely won’t have to wait too long or they can sell the tickets on the secondary market and come away with a profit, hopefully. For the rabid football fan who just wanted to snag a ticket, going next year probably doesn’t make too big of a difference. It is still the Super Bowl, you’re in a covered dome and there is a good chance you will have a decent seat for the game.

While I give no forgiveness to the NFL for this error, I don’t think too much fault can be found in their fire plan.

One last Super Bowl tidbit

I noticed pretty early in the Super Bowl that the turf looked pretty ragged in all of the spots that had new logos for the Super Bowl. In fact, I felt that it looked so bad that it might affect play.

I don’t think it ever really made a difference. As it turns out, the only reason it looked so brutal was that it was probably brand new. I just found out that Cowboys Stadium uses this nifty new roll-out turf system that allows them to interchange parts of the field. So the answer to my original query was that the new turf had not been run on enough to look uniform. You learn something everyday.

Reflecting on the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl, as I said in a previous post, is a jumbled, orchestrated hodgepodge.

The game was not bad.

There were a few minutes in the third quarter where me, and the entire party I was at, had forgotten there was a game on. The Steelers robbery of momentum ended up sucking any and all firepower out of the game.

Luckily, both teams managed to find some footing in the fourth quarter and it made for a great finish. There is no way a penalty was committed on the final Steelers play. It was nothing more than strong coverage and a poorly thrown ball.

In the end, Big Ben made far too many mistakes for the rest of his team to cover up. I was in the majority of people who thought he was going to march the Steelers down the field to victory in the final 2:00. Continue reading

20 Years after Wide Right

It has been 20 years and every news outlet in Buffalo is remembering Scott Norwood’s missed kick.

I don’t remember the game, I was only five. I do remember the 52-17 beating in ’93 and Thurman’s fumble in ’94. But seeing the pictures and the highlights make it all too real.

The worst part is the current reality that Bills fans live in is so much worse. The level of mediocrity is insane. What I would do for Butler and Polian to be back at the helm…

Unfortunately, Tom Modrak keeps getting votes of confidence and drafting players like Aaron Maybin.

The only light at the end of the tunnel is to go buy Madden and play every game until the Super Bowl. I’m fairly certain you can’t simulate the Bills into the playoffs.

Last chance for a win?

Entering this season there were only a few games I had circled as potential victories for the Bills. As the NFL season has unfolded these potential wins have changed too.

Between the Bills “defense” and the evolution of a couple of these teams (Peyton Hills and the Browns), the Bills chances for victories has grown thin.

Ryan Fitzpatrick needs to make some clutch plays if he hopes to lead the Bills to a win.

As Detroit comes into Buffalo for Sunday’s tilt, the Lions are without quarterback Matthew Stafford and should have Shaun Hill under center. Although, Hill is recovering from a broken arm and may not be 100% for the game. It doesn’t really matter he has been torching defenses this year. Add to that Jahvid Best, the Lions attack doesn’t really match up well for the Bills defense. Continue reading

Bills go Lights Out

Buddy Nix made another great roster move today. He placed Cornell Green on IR.

True story, the swinging door at right tackle will not see the field for the remainder of the season. The real news is that the Bills needed to make room for Shawne Merriman. Continue reading

Recapping the Edwards debacile

So Trent Edwards was benched one week ago after two abysmal performances against Miami and Green Bay.

Then, after Ryan Fitzpatrick posted better than Edwards numbers against New England, Edwards became expendable. So, the Bills cut ties with the “Trent-ative” QB, ending a long-running headache for Bills fans.

Edwards didn’t make it through waivers before Jacksonville claimed him. He will serve as the back-up to David Garrard for the time being. However, since I jinxed Garrard by calling him a possible fantasy sleeper he has been really bad. So, there is a chance that Edwards will see the field very soon. Although I don’t think he will play against the Bills in two weeks. Continue reading

Trent to the bench

Like this comes as a surprise to anyone. I’m actually amazed that ESPN even bothered putting the Bills’ QB switch on the Bottom Line today.

In case you haven’t heard, Ryan (not Rory) Fitzpatrick will replace Trent Edwards as the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback this week against New England. Continue reading

Fantasy fully underway

Week one of the regular season is fully in the books. That also means that fantasy football is off and running.

I eked out a victory in week one but hope to have a larger cushion in week two, we shall see. But that is not why I am writing this piece. After one week of NFL fantasy football you are likely scrambling to fix the glaring weaknesses you failed to address at your draft. Or, you need to make up for an injury (Ryan Grant and Kevin Kolb owners).

Legedu Naanee appears to be a worthy pick-up as he was targeted numerous times by Phillip Rivers, Monday.

So, who are the hot waiver wire pick-ups heading in to week two? Continue reading

One loss closer to Jake Locker

The prospect of facing the Dolphins is certainly not what it used to be. Mike Harrington’s column highlights the sentiment perfectly.

No snow and no talent certainly make the game tougher to watch. However, the Bills defense looked outstanding. Beginning in the second quarter they locked down the Dolphins offense, it did little aid for my fantasy team though.

Trent Edwards failed to throw the ball downfield on a consistent basis against the Dolphins.
