Skidding Sabres

I wanted to let the dust settle, on both Buffalo sports teams.

The Sabres were sleepwalking their way through their first dozen games and the Bills have continued to find interesting ways to lose. But there were all of these different opinions floating around each squad, I wanted to let everything settle down before making a judgment on either.

That brings me to the Sabres. Everyone keeps asking, ‘what is wrong with them this season?’ There are a few common threads and a few things no one has really brought up. Continue reading

Bills go Lights Out

Buddy Nix made another great roster move today. He placed Cornell Green on IR.

True story, the swinging door at right tackle will not see the field for the remainder of the season. The real news is that the Bills needed to make room for Shawne Merriman. Continue reading

I guess we know what James Wisniewski does on the weekend

I understand that nobody goes to Islanders games. I get that. I think it is also safe to assume that not too many people watch the games either. But still, YouTube is a very real tool and James Wisniewksi just found out how useful it is.

Here is some visual evidence of James likely talking to Sean Avery about something very civilized.

Second period…

Ok. I gave you my Eastern Conference preview. I like the Captials to win the regular season, but I don’t see them getting past the second round of the playoffs. I think the East will be a crapshoot again this season. Much like 2009-10 when the Flyers came outta nowhere to win a trip to the finals.

The West however, is another story. There are some great teams and a ton of talent. The top-five will have to punch each other out for a chance at Lord Stanley. Here is how  I see it.

The Canucks and Kings have two awesome throwbacks. And they are two favorites to win the West.

The best game you can name

It is finally hockey season. Here is a look at how I think things are going to shake out in order of conference finish.

Alex Ovechkin and the Caps might win the regular season but certainly not the playoffs.

Recapping the Edwards debacile

So Trent Edwards was benched one week ago after two abysmal performances against Miami and Green Bay.

Then, after Ryan Fitzpatrick posted better than Edwards numbers against New England, Edwards became expendable. So, the Bills cut ties with the “Trent-ative” QB, ending a long-running headache for Bills fans.

Edwards didn’t make it through waivers before Jacksonville claimed him. He will serve as the back-up to David Garrard for the time being. However, since I jinxed Garrard by calling him a possible fantasy sleeper he has been really bad. So, there is a chance that Edwards will see the field very soon. Although I don’t think he will play against the Bills in two weeks. Continue reading

Really cool SI feature

SI.com put together a really cool number ranking for the NHL. It chronicles the best player to wear each number. Plenty of no-names up there wearing numbers like 98, 73 and the likes of that. But, it is still pretty cool. I’m not sure who they choose for number 99….

Here is the link.

Sabres unveil new uniforms (officially)

After the Sabres new away and third jerseys were leaked online, there wasn’t too much tension on my end watching the jersey unveiling on Saturday.

However, it was really awesome to see them in person, particularly the new road uniforms. The 2008 Winter Classic brought back the memory of how great our original white jerseys were, this makes it that much better. I feel the navy blue looks even better than the royal blue did previously, although I’m likely in the minority there. All-in-all, the new white jerseys are nothing short of flawless.

The absolute awesomeness of the new Sabres road uniform

Trent to the bench

Like this comes as a surprise to anyone. I’m actually amazed that ESPN even bothered putting the Bills’ QB switch on the Bottom Line today.

In case you haven’t heard, Ryan (not Rory) Fitzpatrick will replace Trent Edwards as the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback this week against New England. Continue reading

If Derek Jeter wasn’t a tool before he certainly is now

I have never liked Derek Jeter. Mainly because I have never liked the Yankees. Sorry Yankee fans, I’m not a fan of buying your championships. Sure, I root for the Mets, but that is my Buffalo upbringing, I need to root for a team with no chance of success.

Anyway, Derek Jeter has always struck me as a toolbox. I don’t know why, but he has always rubbed me the wrong way. Finally, on Wednesday, he cemented his legacy as a douche by pretending to be hit by a pitch against the Rays.

Here is the video:

What a doucher. Seriously. For all the talk about how great he his how about a little devils advocate, eh?

This isn’t even close to gamesmanship either. This is flat-out cheating. I am okay with a cornerback arm barring a wideout on a go pattern and not getting flagged. That’s fine, even goalies “bumping” into the net during a scramble to get a whistle. I do that myself. But I’m not pulling pucks out of the net or wearing netting in my armpits to catch biscuits. Jeter’s actions are on a whole different level.

I’m curious to see what the MLB reaction is to this incident. Not because the guy cheated, but because instant replay would have fixed it. The same goes for the blown perfect game and numerous other calls that umpires miss each season.

The time has come for the MLB to swallow their pride and adopt instant replay. This nonsense cannot go on any longer.
